Santa Monica Book Fair

It was a small event, but it was well attended by those interested in the LA Literary scene. The send annual Santa Monica book sponsored by Beyond Baroque was a great outing for Sybaritic Press. New authors Brenda Petrakos (Stories from the Inside Edge - on Amazon.com now) and Rachel Kann (10 for everything -- out very soon) wowed the audience with perfromances of their riveting short prose. We even had some press coverage that we'll share soon. It was a great day to meet other small press publishers, enjoy some fine talent and sell some books. More is coming soon as Brenda, Rachel and co-publisher Marie hit the road with a series of summer performances. Stay tuned here for details.

Book Launch Extravaganza

On Saturday May 19th, the Staff of Sybaritic Press was invited to help launch the brilliant book of short stories by Brenda Petrakos. The launch for Stories from the Inside Edge was not a typical one. Oh no. Brenda is an accomplished performer and former stand-up comedian who is also a film maker. The audience who came out and filled the Santa Monica venue to capacity was treated to a multi-media performance of selections from the collection. The breadth and dept of these stories was really put on display by the varied performances from an eclectic group of individuals. There was the tired, put upon wage slave thwarted from a long anticipated evening underwear clad sprawl in an easy chair with a TV and the beloved remote by the words men most dread hearing: We Need to Talk. Then there was the wrenching and poignant Steps, in which a woman considers the miracle of sitting on her very own front steps after considering the most extreme action a mother could take against her children in time of extreme crisis. The high point of the performance was a short film of the first story in the collection. Cop is the tale of a man with a most unusual fetish that makes him as intriguing as it makes him sad.

Brenda sold a lot of books and CDs and impressed a throng of admirers. There was good food and drink and a great time had by all. Our newest author will be touring the region this summer, so there will be opportunities to hear some of the performances for those not in Los Angeles proper. Stay tuned for details.
